7 SHOTS 7: Talal Derki
7 SHOTS 7 is DocsBarcelona’s annual proposal to a relevant figure in the audiovisual world. This year, with the premiere in Barcelona of Talal Derki’s latest and acclaimed documentary Of Fathers and Sons, World Cinema Grand Jury Prize Documentary winner at Sundance Festival, the Syrian filmmaker will reflect about film language through 7 shots or sequences specially selected for the occasion.
Talal Derki visits us again after presenting his first film, Return to Homs at DocsBarcelona 2014 where it was awarded with Best Film, as well as winning Best Documentary at Sundance Festival. The festival’s audience will be able to enjoy his acclaimed second film, Of Fathers and Sons, with its director in attendance taking part in the Q&A sessions after the screenings.
In addition, we have invited him to talk about his films in a Master Class through a very personal selection of sequences. A unique opportunity to get closer to the cinematography of one of the emerging talents of the documentary genre worldwide. What compels him to make films, what stories and characters is he interested in, and how does he manage to bring them to the big screen? The Master Class will be moderated by DocsBarcelona’s head of programming, Tue Steen Müller.
Talal Derki was born in Damascus and has lived in Berlin since 2014. He studied Film Directing in Athens and worked as a director’s assistant for numerous feature films. He also directed several shows for Arabian TV between 2009 and 2011. Furthermore, he worked as an independent cameraman for CNN and Thomson & Reuters. Both his shorts and features have been awarded at several festivals worldwide. His documentary Return to Homs (DocsBarcelona 2014) won the festival’s Best Film Award and also the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2014. That same year, he was also a member of IDFA’s international jury.
