DocsBarcelona, International Documentary Film Festival will celebrate its 21st edition from 16th to 27th May 2018

With twenty editions behind it, DocsBarcelona is a festival specialized in the documentary genre that is composed of three competitive Official sections: Panorama, Latitude and What The Doc!, as well as several sections out of competition and master classes. All the films that make up the different sections are selected by an international programming committee.

The Open Call for film submission of films is closed, and no more films are accepted; the deadline ended on December 4.

The Panorama section brings together a selection of the best documentaries from the most recent international panorama. The films in this section compete for the DocsBarcelona Best Film Award and the New Talent Award for the best film by first-time director.

The What The Doc! section brings together a selection of the most daring and innovative films on the international scene. The films in this section compete for the What The Doc! Award.

And finally, the section Latitude DocsBarcelona is a competitive section that brings together a selection of the best documentaries from the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America. The films in this section compete for the Latitude DocsBarcelona Award, sponsored by Antaviana Films.

The films of the three sections run also for the Amnesty International Catalonia Award, granted by the so-called NGO, and for the Audience Award, granted by the audience attending.

The programme of the DocsBarcelona is complemented with the traditional sections DOC-U, with the best of the national university production and Docs & Teens, with a selection for teenagers. Both sections have their specific Audience Award; and finally, the Special Sessions are presented out of competition.

In the last edition, 90 productions from 30 countries were screened in 12 theatres, since, for the first time, the festival had a presence beyond its main headquarters, Barcelona, to reach 6 new Catalan cities, through DocsBarcelona a Prop. With the aim of bringing professional talent and productions closer to our audience, 77 representatives of the selected documentaries visited us, reaching about 50 Q&A celebrated with directors, experts and their protagonists. Other meetings between professionals and the audience are the Master Classes and round tables that the DocsBarcelona proposes annually, as well as the Vermouth with the directors held at the Altaïr bookstore in Barcelona.

For wine-loving moviegoers, Docs & Wine is a very special sensory experience that unites some of the festival’s films with a selection of wines. An activity open to the general public that proposes a game in which participants enjoy a new way of approaching the documentary world and the festival’s programme.

As every year, part of the festival’s programming can be viewed online through FILMIN platform, which last year received more than 4,500 spectators.
