Amazona, the documentary directed by Clare Weiskopf that inaugurated DocsBarcelona 2017, breaks into the nomination of the Goya Awards!
AMAZONA, the opening film at the 20th edition of DocsBarcelona and that triumphed in the DocsBarcelona of the Month this past November, has been selected as a candidate to win the Goya Award for Best Ibero-American Film.
The documentary by Colombian director Clare Weiskopf, in which she talks about the peculiar relationship with her mother, has already been selected to represent Colombia at the Goya Awards 2018 and today, Wednesday December 13, the Amazona nomination has become effective, along with the other three finalist films: Tempestad (Mexico), Una mujer fantástica (Chile) and Zama(Argentina).
Amazona started as a project in a development workshop given by Joan Gonzàlez, director of the DocsBarcelona Festival, in 2014 and held in Cartagena de Indias. That same year, participated in the Industry activities of DocsBarcelona, presented at the Pitching Forum 2014 and in 2015, it was one of the projects selected for the Rough Cuts screenings. Amazona has been accompanied by DocsBarcelona during all its stages of development since its very inception.
The film tells the story of Val, told and seen through the lens of her daughter Clare. After a tragic family loss, Val leaves behind her children to enter the Colombian jungle and discover herself as a woman without the bonds of duty.
Thirty years later and pregnant, Clare decides to confront her mother to understand her and define her own motherhood in less conventional terms. Together they will embark on a trip through the jungle to the most intimate maelstrom of their relationship, which will lead them to explore the border between responsibility and freedom without guilt or blame. What does it mean to be a good mother?
The Goya Awards, the great festival of Spanish cinema, will celebrate its 32nd edition on February 3, 2018, during an “innovative” gala that, once again, will be broadcast live on TVE 1, starting at 10 p.m. The Madrid Marriott Auditorium Hotel will be the framework of this ceremony that Globomedia will produce.
